Advanced Applications

Being the laboratory of the manufacture of laser particle size measurement instruments affords the lab direct access to in-depth knowledge on Microtrac instruments. Some of this depth comes from the scientific staff at Microtrac. This is of special importance since Microtrac scientists and engineers can be “called in” to assist with special applications. This relationship extends the abilities of the lab to the physicists, mathematicians, chemists and engineers who know the special, intimate details of the operation and maintenance of Microtrac instruments.

Additionally, sample preparation development, instrument operating advice, SOP development and other advanced needs are addressed by the laboratory staff.

Standards

Particle Size Distribution of Powders by Laser Light Scattering

ASTM UOP Method 856-07 is a standard used to determine the particle size distribution of powders and slurries using laser light scattering.  The apparatus used in the development of this method was the Microtrac S3500. ©2007 ASTM

Surfactants

Triton X100 is the name of a chemical that has been in use for many years in particle size measurements as well as in household goods. It is considered a high-foaming surfactant that has excellent grease dissolving characteristics as used in liquid dish detergents since the 1960s.

Use of Triton X100 Surfactant provides an explanation of its use in Microtrac instruments as a wetting agent and as a cleaning agent.
